A terraced chestnut occupies the hilly area between the Church of St. George and the Aquate Chapel forest with dry stonewalls of medieval origin. Thanks to important interventions of recovery (care of the trees, cleaning of the ground, and restoration of the dry-stone walls), the Lostallo chestnut forest is an important testimony to the agricultural history and material culture of Mesolcina. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about 500 hectares of chestnut woods in the valley, almost all of which were abandoned during the 20th century, made up of trees grafted with fruit varieties, well-spaced from each other, situated on pastureland or meadows. Some of these groves are now being recovered and restored.
