Just before reaching the village of San Bernardino, you will touch the lake, which has a capacity of 6.5 million cubic metres of water. The arched dam, 45 metres high, was built in 1960. The valley path then continues straight ahead, skirting the lake on a dirt track through the fir trees. An interesting alternative is to cross the dam and go over the motorway on a footbridge in order to reach S. Bernardino in about 45 minutes via the Portela Alp. From the dam, there is a fantastic view over the wide opening of the pass and, to the right, the unmistakable pyramidal silhouette of Pizzo Uccello, which recalls the ancient name of the area and the pass “Culmen de Ouxello”. The route of the carriage road can be clearly distinguished and the other possible routes to cross the pass on paths and mule tracks can be predicted.
