This peat bog, with a surface area of around 2.8 hectares, was created around 10,000 years ago by the silting up of a glacial basin. It is an extreme environment where animal and plant species have adapted to live and can only be found here. The peat bog is also a natural archive that has preserved pollen deposited in the soil for millennia, and allows us to reconstruct the history of the repopulation of the area after glaciation. Acting like a huge sponge that absorbs water, the peat bog helps prevent flooding. From Suossa it is possible to return to S. Bernardino by following the route to the Portela Alp mentioned earlier.
